Significance Of The Salem Witch Trials - 1284 Words
The Salem Witch Trials, which started in 1692 and ended in 1693, was a major event that changed history and affected America greatly. A young group of puritan girls accused many lower class women of practicing witchcraft. There were many trials held to see if there was proof of this. 20 people died during this time and many others were held in jail until they could go to trial. This really affected us because it showed how poorly built the trials were; this made us see that we should change and give a fair trial to others. After their family member has just been accused of being a witch then hung they would be left emotionally damaged. Afterwards when they stopped believing the girls when they would accuse someone and let everyone go, they were left with both debt and very little to do. With their reputation, nobody would have wanted to have anything to do with them. This also left a major impact on American history in many ways. During the Salem Witch Trials many families were split apart from each other when one of them was accused or if they had different opinions on the situation. It happened to families that were both apart of the accuse rs and the accused. It also changed the way people are now seen in court. Back then, they didnââ¬â¢t have a lawyer to defend them but now we can have one to help us. A Hope free essay sample
I remember the first time I ever entered my local library, a rush of cool air had greeted me and beckoned me in from the summer heat. There was nothing special about the library at all, it was just like all the others I had seen in my nine year existence before I had moved to New Jersey. There was a Reference Desk to the right busy with patrons checking in and out books as the Childrens Section to my left sat scarce with only the Childrens Librarian to keep it company.Carefully I entered the section and was awestruck as I glanced up at the ceiling to see a beautiful mural of sea creatures swimming through the depths of the ocean. The blue of a Sperm whale mixed well with the green of a sea turtle as they looked at each other happily surrounded by other smaller fish. I ran my tiny fingers along the spines of the countless novels before me and wondered what kind of secrets they held. I picked out a red book with wispy black markings and pondered if this was the novel that would finally teach me how to talk to people properly. Then I picked out another and another, wondering if within these thin white pages I would find something incredible and amazing. In that moment I fell head first in love with the library and the immense amount of knowledge that filled it. As I got older my love affair with books and the library soon became troublesome as I would forgo conversation and bury my nose in a book instead. My step-mother soon discovered that no matter how hard she tried, no matter how hard she pushed, I would not be involved with anything that did not have to do with the library. I joined the Teen Advisory Board at my local library the moment I turned thirteen and immersed myself in the world of volunteering. Up until that time I was a quiet, timid girl who refused to speak because I was afraid my tongue would get in the way. I feared my peers and I feared becoming something other than the self I knew. But slowly my lips began to loosen as I started to work with people of all ages. For the first time in my life social anxiety did not constrict my every move. For the first time in me life I felt free to be something more than what I was.I volunteered at every chance I had and soon received the Presidential Award for my hard work. Not only did I gain friends through these experiences, I also gained a family and a relationship with my community. These experiences also taught me that anyone can change with a little push and that I want to be the lynch pin that causes that change in another timid youth by being a Young Adult Librarian. I am well prepared to achieve success at Rutgers University with this well powered dream. This is my one chance, my one hope, to help someone like me and I will not let it pass me by.

Continuation of media influence on adolescents Dissertation
Continuation of media influence on adolescents - Dissertation Example Although, both men and women read, viewed and heard various media content, women are maximally influenced by the content both in the physical sense as well as in the mental sense. That is, while men are merely excited, women strive to be just as flawless and perfect as projected in mass media by following lifestyle practices, which sometimes could border on negativity. (Sengupta and Dahl 2008). When one looks historically, when other electronic forms had not yet made an appearance, print magazines was the major media influence occupying the mind space of both men and women. However, as mentioned above, although males read the magazines, they were not maximally influenced by them to incorporate as part of their lifestyle, this was not the case with the females. In those times, women are mainly viewed (and the adolescent girls were prepared) as housewives or homemakers, whose primary duty is to take care of their husbands, children and the household. (Sengupta and Dahl 2008).So, the me dia content in mid part of the 20th century featured information as well as tips mainly regarding this lifestyle of women. Although, some magazines also featured content and tips on other extra-curricular activities that can be carried out by the women, it was only in minority. The basic point is, all forms of media content mainly reflect or write or broadcast what is happening in the real society about real people or specifically about real women at that particular time. Thus, mass media now or earlier reflected or featured women centric issues that was/is prevalent. However, certain issues are not time-bound and are visible now also. Quite importantly, apart from reflecting what is in the society, this media content will also influence the society. That is, like a chain reaction, the media content gets created from the society, and when the society starts to continuously read a ââ¬Ëspecificââ¬â¢ type of content, they will or if correctly said, majority of them will get influ enced, thereby creating norms or stereotypes. This will change the lifestyle of many. As more adolescent boys and especially girls read, view or hear the media content, they will/have started viewing them as the eye-opener for many of their lifestyle choices as well as panacea for all their problems. When they do this, they will avoid or even ignore any tips from their parents For the past few decades, sexuality has been used in the mass media as the main form of gaining the attention of its viewers particularly the target segment of adolescents or youths, often showing models in a physical appearance, which negatively influences the adolescents. These contents in the mass media often use the subject of sexuality to promote the product or other features by correlating the two. Sizable content in the mass media show women as a symbol of beauty and sexuality, impacting men and women in different ways. (Sengupta and Dahl 2008). So, this literature review focusing on the trends and the influencing role of the mass media, will first discuss about the 1950s and 1960s mass media mediums particularly magazines and its impact or influence on the lives of the female, comparing it with the magazines of today. As part of the comparison, the review will also focus on how these mass media content took the ââ¬Ëinformational adviserââ¬â¢ tag, and gave a lot of tips to the adolescents, who sometimes preferred these media content over their parents.
